The time honored tradition of a father taking his son to the barbershop is much more than a simple hair cut. It is a lesson in personal grooming. It is a simple ritual of self-aesthetic. But overall, it is a time to bond. In the world of the classical male groomer when someone younger than you sits in the chair, it is about dropping seeds of knowledge while you are cutting their hair. Between the scissor cuts, fades, Brooklyns, razor shaves, mohawks and upsweeps, we converse on becoming better men.

So many males of all colors step into my chair with the woes of the world around what makes them a male first, then a man. Frankly, many of us do not have a clue. We share our stories, laugh, and internally cry. What I must say is that when I cut hair, I think of my son Taj, who has given me the honor to be his father. Some days he tries me, but everyday, I love him.

When I was attending Hampton University in the mid-1990s, I was told I was expecting a child. I made the decision to leave school and support my son Taj. At first, I worked odd jobs to get by. I was sorter for the US Postal Services, and I worked at a telephone company. I even did telemarketing. but that was not me. I am an artistic person and I needed something that challenged my creativity. I had been cutting my hair since high school, and a host of friends from my neighborhood. One day it clicked that I could be a barber.

I decided to enter cosmetology school at Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School for Adults. Thirteen years later, here I stand as an accomplished young man who is emerging as a rare commodity in the hair industry---a specialist in classical male grooming.

Classical male grooming is the type of male grooming our fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers received. Quality hair cuts, a great shave, a good shampoo, and a hot towel wrap. Seems simple, but I have learned that it is the simple things that makes one feel good.

I have dedicated my career to superior male grooming and I continue this while managing a barber shop in New Jersey. I also provide mobile services, as well as offer barbering workshops from Atlanta to the New York Metropolitan area.
